Electronic Badge Privacy & Data Guide 2026: What Data Beambox Collects and How to Protect Yourself

Electronic badges connect to your phone via Bluetooth and sync with a cloud service. Like all connected devices, they collect and process data. This guide explains what data Beambox badges collect, how the app works, and what you can do to protect your privacy.

What Data Beambox Badges Collect

Here's what you should know about Beambox data collection:

Data Collected by the App

  • Account information: Email address if you create an account, name (optional)
  • Badge content: Images, GIFs, QR codes, and text you upload to the app and send to your badge
  • Usage data: How you use the app, which features you use, and when
  • Device information: Phone model, operating system version, and Bluetooth identifier
  • Connection logs: When your badge connects to your phone and for how long

Data NOT Collected

  • Location data: Beambox does not use GPS. The badge itself does not track your location.
  • Audio or video: The badge has no camera or microphone. It cannot record audio or capture images beyond what you explicitly upload.
  • Contacts: The app does not access your phone's contact list.

How the Beambox Cloud Sync Works

When you create content in the Beambox app:

  1. Content is stored in the Beambox cloud so you can access it from multiple devices
  2. Content syncs to your badge via Bluetooth when you're connected to the app
  3. Deleting content from the app typically removes it from the cloud, though some data may be retained for a period per Beambox's data retention policy

QR Code Privacy Considerations

QR codes on your badge link to destinations you choose. When someone scans your badge QR code:

  • They go to the URL you set (your LinkedIn, Linktree, appointment booking page, etc.)
  • The destination website may collect their data according to its own privacy policy — not Beambox's
  • You have no visibility into who scans your QR code unless the destination page captures and shares that data with you

Before setting a QR code destination, review the privacy policy of the linked site.

Bluetooth Privacy

  • Range: Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) has a typical range of 30–50 feet. Anyone within this range with a Bluetooth scanner could potentially detect your badge's presence.
  • Identifier: Your badge broadcasts a unique Bluetooth identifier. This identifier can theoretically be used to track you across locations if someone is actively tracking that identifier.
  • Always detectable: When powered on, the badge is discoverable via Bluetooth. You cannot use the badge while making it invisible to Bluetooth scans.

What You Can Control

  • Account data: You can typically request access to, correction of, or deletion of your personal data by contacting Beambox support
  • App permissions: You can revoke the app's Bluetooth and camera permissions at any time from your phone's settings
  • Content: You control what content appears on your badge — nothing is displayed without your explicit upload
  • Account deletion: Contact Beambox to request deletion of your account and associated data

Tips for Enhanced Privacy

  • Use a QR code destination with good privacy practices: Linktree and similar services have their own privacy policies — review them before using them as your QR code destination
  • Don't display sensitive personal information: Your home address, personal phone number, or other sensitive info shouldn't be on your badge content
  • Power off when not in use: If you're concerned about Bluetooth tracking, turn the badge off when you're not actively using it
  • Don't share your badge: The badge is paired to your account. Lending it to others links their usage to your account

Third-Party Services

The Beambox app may use third-party services for:

  • Analytics: Understanding how users use the app
  • Crash reporting: Identifying and fixing app bugs
  • Cloud storage: Storing your badge content

These third parties have their own privacy policies. Beambox's privacy policy should describe which third parties are used.
